It was a marvelous evening on Sunday, Feb. 23 at the opening of the new Off-Broadway comedy, Conversations with Mother.

That’s because the event brought about the reunion of three Marvelous Mrs. Maisel stars: Caroline Aaron, Michael Zegen and Tony Shalhoub.

Fans of the Emmy-winning Amazon Studios series will remember Aaron, 72, and Zegen, 46, played mother-and-son duo Shirley Maisel and Joel Maisel. Shalhoub, 71, had the role of Abe Weissman, Joel’s ex father-in-law and father to series lead, Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan).

The trio were back together on Sunday to support Aaron. The veteran actress is starring in the play as an overbearing Italian matriarch named Maria Collavechio, who coincidentally shares more than a few personality traits in common with Shirley.

One big difference? Maria’s got a free-spirited gay son, portrayed by Tony winner Matt Doyle. The two-hander follows the relationship between the pair over the course of five decades.

“As they continue to test their lifelong bond, the play depicts the outrageously funny and sometimes completely infuriating dynamic between a conventional mother and her free-spirited son,” an official release states.

Playwright Matthew Lombardo (Looped, Tea at Five) penned Conversations with Money. His semi-autobiographical comedy received raved reviews, with Aaron and Doyle’s layered performances getting much praise.

“It’s a real gift sharing the stage with @therealcarolineaaron ❤️,” Doyle, 37, wrote on Instagram on Friday, Feb. 21. “So grateful for this journey and for the overwhelmingly positive response our show has received so far.”

Directed by Noah Himmelstein, the play runs through May 11 at Theater 555 in New York City.

Tickets for Conversation with Mother are on sale now.
