Harry Kane: “The performance was OK. Whenever you win a game like this, you can be pleased because it’s a difficult place to come. We need to improve next week. We scored at the right times.

“We knew the atmosphere would give them some momentum at the start of the game. We had to be patience. Sometimes you need moments of quality to change games.”

A quiet night at Goodison Park … I think not.

Celtic worked tireless to keep Bayern out but came to life in an attacking-sense after conceding twice. I wouldn’t give hem much of a chance in Germany next week but it will be interesting to see if they can cause more problems for Bayern.

Full time! Celtic 1-2 Bayern Munich

A valiant effort from Celtic but Bayern just had a little too much quality on the night.

Share

90+6 mins: Celtic are looking to work one final chance. I suspect it will need to come from a wide position.

Share

90+4 mins: After a hectic spell, Bayern are doing their best to take the sting out of the final stages by keeping possession.

Share

90+2 mins: Yang gets the ball into Johnston inside the box; the Canadian takes a touch and fires towards the near post but Neuer is waiting.

Celtic get another corner after Upamecano ignores his goalkeeper and heads behind. Engels the cross in and Bayern eventually scramble it away.

Share

90 mins: Seven minutes added on!

Share

89 mins: Kane is on the deck holding his head after a challenge with Carter-Vickers. The England striker does not look happy with the world.

Share

87 mins: Maeda is penalised for taking down Ito with a crude challenge. The Celtic man is giving it his all.

Muller replaces Musiala. It also looks lively in the away end, it should be said.

Share

85 mins: Johnston’s cross is headed down to Schlupp whose rifled shot is blocked.

Jota whacks a shot from the edge of the box well over. It is all Celtic!

Share

83 mins: Celtic really need to come out of this match with draw, so they are going to spend the final stages putting Bayern under pressure. There looks to be renewed energy in the Celtic ranks.

Share

81 mins: This feels significant. Lordy! Hatate whacks a shot from close range but is blocked and Celtic have another corner. This is lively.

Share

GOAL! The corner is flicked on and Yang gets a touch on to Maeda, who turns home from close range. VAR has a long look but there seems no issue … and it is given. CELTIC PARK IS ALIVE!

78 mins: Kuhn is off, Yang is on for Celtic. Guerreiro off, Ito on (for his debut) for Bayern.

Share

76 mins: Have Bayern’s players fallen out with Neuer? They keep sending him hospital passes. The German goalkeeper just about clears another dreadful backpass while under pressure.

Share

74 mins: SO CLOSE! A Bayern mix up at the back allows Maeda to nip in and round Neuer but the angle is tricky, so the Celtic man’s shot flashes across goal rather than into it.

Share

72 mins: A Bayern cross makes it all the way to Gnabry, who takes a touch and fires at goal, only to see Schmeichel get right behind it.

Schlupp puts in a strong (but fair) challenge on Kimmich, leaving the German on the deck.

Share

70 mins: Upamecano seems to be sleepwalking and plays another subpar pass in his defensive third, this time to Kimmich, who just gets a toe on it before Maeda.

Share

68 mins: Upamecano sends a questionable backpass to Neuer but the goalkeeper reacts quickly and whacks clear before a Celtic man can intercept.

Share

66 mins: Idah and Taylor off, Jota and Schlupp on for Celtic; Olise and Sane off for Bayern, Gnabry and Coman on for Bayern.

The Germans, arguably, have the stronger bench.

Share

64 mins: Engels whips in an extremely dangerous cross but Upamecano gets in the way, sending the ball behind.

Bayern try to break but McGregor is called for a handball.

Share

62 mins: “Is anyone else confused by the goal-scoring machine that is Harry Kane when at our last tournament he appeared to show that he was “finished”?” asks Phil. “If he had an injury that he kept quiet then shouldn’t he have been rested/dropped? I don’t keep up with all the news so apologies if this has been covered already …”

I think he accepts now that he was not fully fit and was nowhere near his best.

Share

60 mins: Johnston flies down the right and pings a low cross into the box but Dier is in the line of fire and whacks away.

Share

58 mins: Well … that was fun. Not sure what the VAR lads were on about, the defender got a clear touch. All a needless waste of time.

Share

57 mins: Upamecano catches Engels on the top of his foot inside the box after the Bayern man gets a touch on the ball. The original confusion was born out of the fact the assistant gave offside against the Celtic man.

The referee has a very long look and … GIVES NO PENALTY!

Share

56 mins: Show us a replay lads … the referee is going to the monitor!

Share

55 mins: Penalty check! Engels goes down in the box under a challenge from Upamecano. No one seemed bothered at the time but the VAR officials are taking a long look. I’ve not seen a replay so have no idea what’s going on.

53 mins: Engels whips in a corner but Bayern have little trouble getting rid.

The second goal has encouraged Celtic to try attacking at least.

Share

51 mins: It is starting to feel like damage limitation for Celtic now. Saying that … Celtic break down the other end and Hatete has a shot which is divert behind by a Bayern leg.

Share

GOAL! Kane is left in space at the back post, allowing him to volley Kimmich’s corner into the back of the net from six yards. Some poor defending from Celtic.

49 mins: Trusty is back up and Bayern have a corner … and Johnston whacks it clear.

Share

47 mins: Kimmich pings a shot from 20 yards and Schmeichel gets behind it.

Bayern earn a corner soon after. It feels like this will be a long 45 minutes for Celtic.

Trusty is on the deck in pain after doing some damage to himself in the turf.

“There’s something of the Angeball about Kompany’s Bavarians, with constant overloads in attack and one-on-on defending,” says Kári Tulinius. “On the one hand, this demonstrates how effective this kind of high risk football can be with greater resources, on the other, the domination feels brittle. Mind you, I felt the same way about Flick’s Bayern and they won six trophies in one season.”

Half-time: Celtic 0-1 Bayern Munich

So much hard work from Celtic but one moment of quality has put Bayern ahead.

Share

GOAL! Olise picks the ball up on the right and jinks inside, leaving Taylor unable to follow and pings his shot into the top corner from 18 yards.

43 mins: Down the other end, Bayern win a corner when it should be a goal kick. A tough two minutes for the lads with flags. Johnston heads it behind for a another corner.

Kane is lurking at the back post at the second corner and earns some space but heads wide.

Share

41 mins: Idah thinks he’s won a corner but the assistant referee incorrectly says no, earning the ire of the home fans.

Simon McMahon says: “Celtic totally dominated Bayern for the first 30 seconds, which, if Brendan Rodgers is looking for positives at half time, is something I suppose.”

Share

39 mins: Maeda whips in a decent looking cross but Upamecano reads the danger and clears. Celtic are putting in the hard yards here but they are yet to create a decent chance (except the disallowed goal).

Share

37 mins: Kimmich swings in a free-kick from the left flank, it flicks off a Bayern head but Upamecano thinks a corner is coming his way, so leaves it to go out of play. The Bayern centre-back now regrets that decision.

Share

35 mins: Hatate plays a loose pass in his defensive third and Bayern intercept. Celtic just about recover and clear, but they are certainly under the pump.
